A historic Lincolnshire water tower which boasts the potential for “truly rare” development potential is up for sale.
By: Jamie Waller, LDRS
The 129-year old Cox’s Tower in Gainsborough could be turned into a six-storey home in a “Grand Designs style project”.
The Grade II-listed structure sits on the top of Cox’s Lane in Gainsborough, giving any occupants panoramic views over the town. A new owner would also be able to build three new five-bedroom homes surrounding the tower under planning permission from West Lindsey District Council.
The development has a guide price of £225,000 and an undisclosed reserved price, and is marketed by William H Brown.
A pair of robbers have appeared in court after a vulnerable disabled woman was assaulted in her bed in Retford.
Kevin Harrison, 39, and Terri Styring, 34, burst into their victim's Retford home on September 20 last year while wearing face coverings.
After entering through an unlocked door, they demanded money.
After an emergency alarm was activated, one of the group began to punch the victim in the forehead and chest area.
After the struggle, they left with the victim's mobile phone.
After extensive support from neighbourhood officers, Harrison, of Wellington Square, Retford – who was known to the victim – was arrested three days later.
Styring, of no fixed address, was arrested nine days later. Both had been caught on CCTV on their way to and from the crime scene.
Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday 10 June, they both pleaded guilty to robbery. Accounting for the time they had both spent in prison on remand, they were each given suspended sentences of 18 months and handed restraining orders prohibiting any further contact with the victim for a period of five years.
Proposed upgrades to the A46 Nettleham roundabout
By: Jamie Waller, LDRS
A major new scheme which would drastically improve traffic on Lincoln’s Nettleham Road roundabout has been backed by officials.
The initiative would see an extra lane added to the roundabout and a footbridge would also be created over the A46 to help improve traffic in the area.
The council’s Highways committee gave approval for the project on Monday, June 8, and is expected to be signed off by the Executive councillor soon.
The scheme will help walkers and cyclists move between Lincoln and the nearby villages without crossing the busy dual-carriageway.

Lloyds Bank Announces Closure of Worksop Branch
Lloyds Bank has confirmed that its Worksop branch on Bridge Street will close on 11 November 2026, citing significant changes in customer banking habits, with more people now choosing to bank online, via mobile apps, or over the phone.
The closure will affect the branch at 65 Bridge Street, although customers will continue to have access to banking services through alternative channels, including online banking, the Lloyds mobile app, local Post Office services, and the nearby Halifax branch on Bridge Street.
According to Lloyds, around 550 customers regularly use the branch each month, with many already using other branches, digital banking services, or the Post Office for their banking needs.
Leader's Column 12/06/2026
By: Cllr Julie Leigh, Leader of Bassetlaw District Council:
Plans for a new Police Station in the heart of Worksop were announced last week by myself, Gary Godden, Police and Crime Commissioner for Nottinghamshire, alongside Bassetlaw MP Jo White.
This is an exciting opportunity for our town and the wider district, and one that has been in development behind the scenes for some time. Subject to endorsement by the Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee, discussions will move forward to transfer ownership of 73 Bridge Street to the Police and Crime Commissioner, who is responsible for Nottinghamshire Police’s estate.
The proposal would see Nottinghamshire Police relocate from Queen’s Buildings and establish a new front-counter service and operational facilities in the town centre. This would support our shared ambition to enhance policing, improve accessibility and visibility, and play an important role in creating a safer, more vibrant town centre for residents, businesses and visitors alike.
Looking ahead, we are preparing to create a new Local Plan for Bassetlaw. This plan will help to ensure future growth is carefully managed, supported by the infrastructure and services our communities need, while protecting our environment and making the most of the once-in-a-generation opportunities presented by the Trent Valley Supercluster.
Although our current Local Plan was only adopted in 2024, it will need to be reviewed by 2028-29. Beginning work now means we can have a new plan ready at the right time, providing certainty for residents and helping to guard against speculative development.
As these early stages progress, we will set out a clear timetable so residents know exactly when and how they can have their say. I look forward to sharing further details on how local people can get involved in the months ahead.
Finally, I was delighted to visit the Priory Centre site last week and see first-hand the excellent progress being made on this transformational development.
If you haven’t been into Worksop town centre recently, the change is already remarkable. With part of the old building now demolished and construction preparations well underway, the scale of the project is becoming clear. It is exciting to see the foundations being laid for a new destination that will bring modern leisure and entertainment facilities back to the heart of our town.
Work is also progressing at pace on the new bridge that will span the Chesterfield Canal and connect the Priory Centre with Dock Road, improving access and helping to unlock the full potential of the site.
We will continue to keep residents updated on this and other major projects through our website and social media channels as we work together to deliver a stronger, safer and more prosperous future for Bassetlaw.

Bassetlaw residents warned over rise in courier fraud
Elderly and vulnerable people across Bassetlaw are being warned to remained vigilant following a rise in courier fraud.
Courier fraud typically begins with an unexpected phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer or bank employee. Victims are told their account is at risk or that they are assisting with an investigation, before being instructed to withdraw money, purchase items, or disclose sensitive information.
A courier is then sent to collect the items such as jewellery, cash, bank cards and PINs. In reality, this is the work of criminals and anything handed over is lost. It generally targets the elderly and vulnerable people, but it can happen to anyone.
A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "Keep an eye out and share the advice with any elderly relatives. The police or your bank will never ask you to transfer money to a safe account and they will also never send a courier to your home to collect bank cards, cash, or other valuables such as jewellery.
"If you're ever unsure - stop, challenge, protect."
Bassetlaw Yesterday brings Bassetlaw’s past back to life — one memory, one photo, one forgotten tale at a time
If you love nostalgia, local history, and celebrating the district we call home, this one’s for you.
Worksop was granted Royal Charter by King George V on 26th August 1931. The granting of the Royal Charter transformed Worksop from a small market town into an independent Municipal Borough, giving it increased local governance powers after years of campaigning.
Local MP Malcolm Macdonald famously brought the charter from London and the celebration was a major event for the town.
There were crowds of thousands in the town with an estimated 7,500 local children receiving special commemorative wooden beakers and a "Charter tea".
Worksop held borough status until the local government reorganizations of 1974, which led to the creation of the Worksop Charter Trustees. Today, this civic body, which consists of the 18 Bassetlaw District Councillors representing Worksop, ensures the heritage and traditions of the borough live on, including the protection of the town's original civic regalia.

At the same time, nearly half of businesses now expect to increase prices over the next three months as rising costs continue to bite. 💷📉

🔹 Overseas orders down 19% and overseas sales down 4%
🔹 Nearly half of businesses expect to raise prices
🔹 Three-quarters of firms continue to operate below full capacity
🔹 Investment in machinery and staff training has been scaled back by many businesses
🔹 Six in ten businesses still report difficulties recruiting suitable staff
🔹 Confidence in future profitability and turnover has fallen sharply
The survey also highlights the biggest concerns facing East Midlands businesses, with inflation, corporate taxation and business rates now ranking as the top three issues affecting firms.

Good news for all the cycling fans out there as Lincolnshire to host first two days of Tour of Britain

The first leg of the men’s event will start and end in Lincoln on Wednesday, September 2, while the following day will start in Boston and end in Skegness.
This is the first time the county has hosted the modern event, and it’s expected to provide a windfall for local hotels, restaurants and shops.
The other three legs will take place across East Yorkshire and North Yorkshire.
The organisation and hosting fee will cost Lincolnshire County Council up to £450,000, although this is expected to lead to large amounts of publicity through the media coverage.

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE: List of nine ‘nationally-significant’ Nottinghamshire projects currently in the works
By: Lauren Monaghan
A range of projects are currently in the pipeline that could change the shape of Nottinghamshire for decades to come – including the creation of the county’s own Silicon Valley.
Nottinghamshire is known as being an energy powerhouse, home to the ‘Trent Supercluster’ – a 14-mile stretch of land home to the former West Burton, Cottam and High Marnham power stations – and home to the UK’s last remaining operational coal-fired plant at Ratcliffe-on-Soar.
Clean energy officials have already been seeking to transform the “Supercluster” area into a Silicon Valley-esque green energy patch.
This is spearheaded by the £2.5 billion Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) Fusion project on the former West Burton A power station site, which focuses on producing a new type of energy replicating that of the sun.
Some projects are a bit smaller, seeking to blanket patches of green land with solar panels in key areas with strong connection links or to reshape important road links to improve traffic flow.
But they are still large and significant enough that they need government ministers’ approval, being classed as ‘nationally significant infrastructure projects’ – or NSIPs.
There are currently several NSIPs in the pipeline for the county, where the majority relate to the booming green energy sector, but one relates to expanding a section of a key bypass that connects counties.

Cottam Solar Project
Gate Burton Energy Park
Great North Road Solar and Biodiversity Park
North Humber to High Marnham

Wartime story preserved through council funding
A mother’s wartime story has been preserved for future generations after securing funding from Bassetlaw District Council.
A book called ‘Little Me and the Untold Story’, a wartime story of resilience has been published and delves into the life of Květa, a 16-year-old girl who escaped from Prague a few months after the start of World War Two.
Květa is the mother of Gillian Hatley-Warnes, who lives in the district, and this full story has been made possible through the council’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
The first part of the book was written by Květa, with Gill adding a follow-on account of her Mum and Dad’s lives and what happened to Květa’s family.
Bank of England Holds Interest Rate at 3.75%
The Bank of England has announced that the Bank Rate will remain at 3.75%, as policymakers continue to monitor inflation and the impact of ongoing global events on the UK economy.
The latest inflation rate has fallen to 2.8%, moving closer to the Bank's target of 2%, but officials have warned that inflation could rise again later this year.
A key concern remains the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted energy supplies and pushed up fuel and utility costs. While energy prices have eased from their initial spike, uncertainty remains over future prices and their impact on households and businesses.
The next Bank Rate decision is due on 30 July 2026.
Celebrating Shared Lives Week 2025
As part of Shared Lives Week (15–19 June), Nottinghamshire County Council is celebrating the incredible carers who help people live independently in a supportive family home environment.
This year's theme, "Shout About Shared Lives – Care Worth Talking About", is perfectly reflected in Joyce’s inspiring story. Since moving in with her Shared Lives carer, Mary, in 2016, Joyce has enjoyed a stable, happy and fulfilling life, remaining connected to her local community, spending time with family and friends, and enjoying holidays, clubs and activities.
Keep Red Arrows British-made, even if it means delays
By: Jamie Waller, LDRS
The new Red Arrows should be made by a British company even if it means they’re temporarily out of action, Lincolnshire’s council leader has said.
The aerial acrobatics team’s Hawk T1 jets are due to be retired in 2030, but the British company aiming to build a replacement has collapsed.
The Ministry for Defence says they’re currently looking for a new provider for the iconic team, which is based at RAF Waddington.
Lincolnshire County Council leader Sean Matthews said the government should wait for another local company to come forward, rather than turn to foreign options.
The current fleet has been in use since the 1980s and is nearing the end of its life.
British company Aeralis, which was hoping to supply the new jets, collapsed in May, partly blaming a delay in the government’s defence investment plan.

Thanks so much for reading our local newsletter and for supporting us. We’re committed to providing Bassetlaw with the quality local news service it deserves, but sustaining this work may come with some challenges. Our team is currently discussing how to make Bassetlaw Today financially viable in the long term, and one option we’re considering is introducing a subscription model to help cover our costs.
We want to be open with you about these conversations so you’re aware that a fee may need to be introduced in the future. If that happens, we hope you’ll continue to stand with us and support the publication.
Have a great day and I look forward to seeing you read our next newsletter.
