Newark Half Marathon runners raise more than £12,500 for Beaumond House

The money will support the charity to continue providing vital hospice care for patients and families across the region
More than £12,500 was raised for Beaumond House Hospice Care through supporters running the Newark Half Marathon in aid of the charity.
A total of £12,600 was raised by over 30 runners who represented Beaumond House, taking on the 13.1 mile challenge around Newark on Sunday 16 August.
The funds will allow the hospice to continue providing supportive palliative and end of life care to patients and their families across North Nottinghamshire, including In-patient Care and Hospice at Home.
Among those taking part in the half marathon was Mel Scott-Avis, who ran in memory of her husband’s grandmother, Pat, who was cared for by Beaumond House during the final stages of her life. After seeing first-hand the positive impact the charity has on patients and families at one of the most difficult times in their lives, Mel was inspired to give back.
Reflecting on the race, Mel said:
“Running the half marathon was such a rewarding experience. It was definitely tough at points, but the atmosphere and support along the route really kept me going.
“I was so pleased to finish in two hours and incredibly proud to have raised £500 for Beaumond House in memory of Pat. It made the challenge feel especially meaningful and I’m very grateful to everyone who sponsored and supported me along the way.”
Also running the half marathon was Nicki Fenton, who works in the Hospice at Home team at Beaumond House. Nicki set herself a ‘5 before 55’ challenge to complete five events before she turns 55 in December - the Lincoln 10k, Edinburgh Marathon, Heckington 10 mile, Newark Half Marathon and the Woodhall Spa Triathlon.
Speaking of the Newark Half Marathon, Nicki said:
“The heat was intense during the half marathon and I felt drained of energy, yet the thought of my patients kept me going. I was fortunate to be able to run well and, along with the fantastic support from the wider Beaumond House team, I finished it in 2 hours and 23 seconds.
“It wasn’t my fastest half marathon, but it was probably my proudest - knowing any money raised would help people who need hospice care in Newark and surrounding areas.”
Caroline Swindin, Head of Fundraising at Beaumond House Hospice Care, added:
“We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in the Newark Half Marathon in support of Beaumond House. To collectively raise more than £12,500 is absolutely brilliant and all our supporters did such an amazing job - it’s truly inspiring.
“Fundraising is so important to Beaumond House, because hospice care isn’t fully funded by the NHS. This year, the gap between our costs and our funding will be £2.2 million, and this gap must be filled through donations, our shops and the incredible support from our local communities.
“Every penny raised goes towards providing compassionate care and support for patients and families when they need it most, meaning our local communities can live well and die well.”

Friends, family and former colleagues of a woman murdered in Ollerton have rallied together to help raise funds to return her body to her homeland of Poland for burial.

Anna Zukowska, 52, was found dead at her home in Ollerton in September.
A man was later charged with her murder. In the wake of the tragedy, Anna's sons launched an online fundraising appeal to cover the costs of taking their mother back to Poland, where they hope to lay her to rest and 'give her the burial she deserves’.
Anna was a much-loved member of staff at the WHSmith store at Doncaster Sheffield Airport before its closure, and former colleagues have been among those backing the fundraising campaign.
One former colleague told Bassetlaw Today that the team had remained close to Anna even after the airport store shut its doors.
"If sunshine was a person, it would be Anna," they said."She had a bright yellow energy surrounding her. She was an absolute light, beautiful both inside and out.
"Her family now just need the last few pounds to reach their target and get her home."
Police were called to an address on James Close in Ollerton shortly before 8pm on Sunday, September 6, where Anna was found.
Jozef Zbigniew Oleszek, 60, has now been charged with Anna’s murder and remains in custody.
The fundraiser was set up by Anna's son, Marcin, to help fulfil the family's wish of returning her body to Poland. Donations can be made at https://tinyurl.com/2wy9yps5 (Content in Polish and English)
Thanks so much for reading our local newsletter and for supporting us. We’re committed to providing Bassetlaw with the quality local news service it deserves, but sustaining this work may come with some challenges. Our team is currently discussing how to make Bassetlaw Today financially viable in the long term, and one option we’re considering is introducing a subscription model to help cover our costs.
We want to be open with you about these conversations so you’re aware that a fee may need to be introduced in the future. If that happens, we hope you’ll continue to stand with us and support the publication.
Have a great day and I look forward to seeing you read our next newsletter.
