Worksop Dock Road Demolition

A set of buildings on Dock Road in Worksop, known as the former Builders Yard, have started to be demolished using Bassetlaw District Council’s emergency powers.

Bassetlaw District Council have stated that following an inspection of the site, the structure of the buildings there are dangerous, present a serious risk to safety, and need to be brought down.

Preparation works have already taken place, in addition to some aspects of demolition.

These could last for up to a further two-three weeks.

Any dust, noise and disruption created by these works will be kept to minimum.

A perimeter wall and additional fencing will be in place to prevent access onto the site.

The Council is in contact with the owner of the site and discussions on the current condition of the site and any future developments will be considered.

Residents Back Gilbert Avenue Playing Field Improvement Project in Tuxford

People in Tuxford have chosen improvements to Gilbert Avenue Playing Field as the project they would most like to see delivered in the town.

Residents shared their views through consultation as part of the Tuxford Streetscaping Project, which asked them to rank a range of possible improvements, with 70% backing Gilbert Avenue Playing Field improvements over the creation of a new skate park.

Tuxford Town Council has supported the results and agreed to the next steps, including looking at delivering the preferred scheme.

Cllr Joan Moorhouse, Chairman of Tuxford Town Council said:

“The Gilbert Avenue project will bring improved sports and leisure facilities to the town.
“Thanks to the government’s Streetscape funding and following the public consultation, we look forward to the works getting underway.”

Plans for Gilbert Avenue Playing Field include creating a more inclusive, high-quality space for sport, fitness and community use. This would support local teams and encourage more grassroots participation.

The original proposals also include modular pods with accessible changing rooms and toilet facilities, improvements to the base of the existing outdoor gym and social area, and tree planting.

Cllr Emma Griffin, Ward Member for Tuxford said:

"We would like to thank everyone who took part in the consultation and shared their views on the future of Tuxford.
“The results show strong support for improvements to Gilbert Avenue Playing Field, and we are pleased to support the next stage of work to look at how this project could be delivered for the benefit of local residents, sports teams and community groups.”

If funding remains available after delivery of the main project, residents identified the following additional priorities:

1.  Linden Avenue Play Park nature and green improvements

2.    Depot and Scout Hut green energy improvements

3.    St Nicholas’ Church clock repair

4.    Brown signage and heritage trail

5.    Improvements to the wall at Tuxford Working Men’s Club

Cllr Steve Scotthorne, Cabinet Member for Identity, Planning and Place said:

"We are pleased that residents have had their say and helped identify the project they would most like to see taken forward.
"The proposals for the Gilbert Avenue Playing Field provide an exciting opportunity to invest in facilities that will make a real difference locally."

The work in partnership with Bassetlaw District Council is being funded by the government’s Streetscaping fund which aims to improve where people live, create employment opportunities, and boost community facilities.

Ollerton canine treat thief in the doghouse

Karl Hanifin SOH.jpg

A dog food thief behind a shoplifting spree has been sent to prison.

Karl Hanifin stole from stores across Ollerton on 11 occasions over a six-week period.

The 41-year-old targeted four shops – most of them numerous times – between 10 August and 23 September.

Each theft saw Hanifin brazenly walk in, make a beeline for the shelves, grab whatever he could get his hands on and then make for the exit.

Dog food and dog treats were the most popular target of his thieving, with headphones, coffee and chocolates other products he stole more than once.

Having visited all four Ollerton shops and reviewed the available footage, officers from the Sherwood neighbourhood policing team were able to identify Hanifin as the culprit.

Neighbourhood officers ultimately managed to catch up with the shoplifter on Friday (25 September) – two days after his final offence – and bring him under arrest.

Hanifin, of Sycamore Road, Ollerton, was then made to attend Nottingham Magistrates' Court the next day, having been charged with 11 counts of shop theft.

Guilty pleas across the board then followed, as did a 12-week custodial sentence. Hanifin was also ordered to pay £1,290 in compensation.

Sergeant Christian Hurley, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

"Our neighbourhood officers did a great job managing to correctly attribute Hanifin to this shoplifting series and then catch him.
"That was made possible thanks to the local knowledge of our officers, with their previous dealings with Hanifin making it possible for them to quickly identify him from the available in-store CCTV.
"Shoplifting is a blight on communities, while it can also be very dispiriting for staff working in the stores targeted, so we were pleased to see the seriousness of Hanifin's offending reflected in a spell behind bars."

New 'Your Notts Directory' launches to connect residents with support, services and community activities

A new online directory bringing together thousands of support services, activities and information resources from across Nottinghamshire and Nottingham City has officially launched.

Your Notts Directory, delivered in partnership between Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council, provides a single, easy to use platform where residents, families, carers and professionals can find local support, advice, community groups and services all in one place.

Designed to simplify searches, the directory offers information across a wide range of topics including childcare, special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), health and wellbeing, housing, education and training, money and finance, work and volunteering, and things to do in the local community.

Residents can search directly for the support they need or browse through themed categories, making it easier than ever to access trusted local information and services. The directory also enables organisations and community groups to list their activities and services, helping people discover support available close to home.

Councillor Rory Green, Cabinet Member for Children and Families, said:

“Your Notts Directory is an important step forward in making it easier for people to find the information, support and services they need. Your Notts Directory provides a trusted single source of information for parents and people in our communities.”

Councillor Neghat Khan, Leader of Nottingham City Council, said:

“It’s great to have a resource like Your Notts Directory for Nottingham residents, particularly for parents and other groups needing support. It’s so important that people can easily access the resources they need, empowering and enabling them to be more independent.”

As the site continues to develop, users are encouraged to explore the directory and share feedback to help shape future improvements. Feedback can be submitted through the website (at the foot of each page) and will help ensure information remains accurate, relevant and easy to access.

The new website replaces both Nottinghamshire County Council's Notts Help Yourself directory and Nottingham City Council's ASKLiON directory, creating one unified resource for the whole area.

Worksop business secures first Pride in Place business support grant

Worksop’s Pride in Place programme has awarded its first grant to help a local business develop and grow.

Lync Wellbeing, based at Bridge Place, has received a £3,000 grant from the Worksop Together Board, in partnership with Bassetlaw District Council. The funding will help the business develop its website and improve its social media presence.

The grant has been awarded through the Pride in Place High Street Business Support Fund. It supports micro and small businesses with up to 49 employees that are working with an adviser through the council’s High Street Business Support programme.

Joe Smith, Manager/Director at LyncActive said:

“We are relaunching our Corporate Wellbeing Service ‘Lync Human-Edge’ from our base in Bassetlaw and with the support of The Pride in Place grant we have been able to develop a website and digital marketing campaign.
“Our objective is to better support local businesses with improving the health and wellbeing of their employees and create a positive impact across our community.”

Supporting local businesses was one of the priorities identified through Worksop Together’s early engagement with the community. Three grant programmes, worth a total of £120,000, were launched earlier this year for businesses to apply for, including the High Street Shop Fit Out Grant and the Worksop Shop Frontage Grant.

Andria Birch, Chair of the Worksop Together Board and CEO of Bassetlaw Community Voluntary Service (BCVS) said:

“We are so pleased to see the first local businesses benefiting from Worksop Together Pride in Place funding and look forward to hearing more about the positive impact on employee wellbeing following the launch of the Lync Wellbeing programme.”

The funding is part of the £20 million Pride in Place government programme, which has been allocated to Worksop and the surrounding area over the next ten years. The programme aims to create new opportunities, support growth and help tackle local issues.

Cllr Steve Scotthorne, Cabinet Member for Identity, Planning and Place added:

“We want to see more businesses doing well on our high streets, and grants like this are a practical way to support them.
“By supporting local investment, we can help create more opportunities and bring empty town centre properties back into use.”

Thanks so much for reading our local newsletter and for supporting us. We’re committed to providing Bassetlaw with the quality local news service it deserves, but sustaining this work may come with some challenges. Our team is currently discussing how to make Bassetlaw Today financially viable in the long term, and one option we’re considering is introducing a subscription model to help cover our costs.

We want to be open with you about these conversations so you’re aware that a fee may need to be introduced in the future. If that happens, we hope you’ll continue to stand with us and support the publication.

Have a great day and I look forward to seeing you read our next newsletter.
